BIG|BRAVE // Live @ Green Door Store, Brighton // 23.05.2024

Experimental Doom-Gazers BIG|BRAVE have been on the road in Europe since the beginning of May, in support of their new album A Chaos of Flowers (Thrill Jockey Records). And the final leg for the Canadian four-piece has landed in the UK, with a return to Brighton on the south-coast following a performance last year in support of 2023s Nature Morte.

And it’s fair to say that the band are currently experiencing a prolific period of creativity, both in the studio and in performing live. They took to the stage at 9pm amid a drone of feedback, and proceeded to intoxicate the modest Green Door Store crowd with their unique sound and style, that really is quite unlike anyone else. And there in lies the charm of BIG|BRAVE – as catching them live is certainly an enjoyably intriguing experience.

BIG|BRAVE stick purely to playing songs from their new record, opening with the sombre ‘Chanson Pour Mon Ombré,’ before providing an almost hypnotic journey of sound, peaking mid-way with their rendition of ‘Canon: In Canon,’ before closing with the songs ‘I Felt A Funeral’ and then ‘Moonset.’ The angelic Folk-like vocals of Robin Wattie often soar through the sound system, while the four musicians play as an incredibly tight unit, despite the loose and improvisational feel they convey from the stage.

Watching their set is like being part of a collective dream, it’s impossible to look away even during long and meandering instrumental sections – which often revolve around the guitars and bass being knocked against the amplifiers to induce feedback and noise. The Jazz inspired drumming from Tasy Hudson always compliments the sounds of distortion around her, and the often minimalist and avantgarde approach they take to delivering their music – perfectly encapsulates the sounds you hear on A Chaos Of Flowers.
