Royal Blood landed in their home town as part of a run of smaller intimate shows to celebrate the release of their fourth album Back To The Water Below which landed on Warner Records at the beginning of the month. The last time the popular Rock duo played Brighton it was back in July in front of around 10,000 people outside on the beach in front of Concorde 2, in an outdoor show that saw them headline over You Me At Six, Wargasm and Kid Kapichi.
In contrast this time the band delivered a short sharp hour long set in the vintage 600 capacity beach front venue, selling the room out twice and performing an early evening slot and then again a few hours later. We caught them hitting the stage at 18:00 for set one, which saw Singer/Bass/Guitarist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher rip through a set that had the local crowd in the palm of their hands from start to finish.
This show saw them perform with no support and was put together in association with Brighton’s premier independent record store Resident, and the duo we joined by a keyboard player as well as a second guitarist at times to help create their studio magic for the small stage. Naturally tracks from the new record got dropped including the likes of ‘Mountains At Midnight’, ‘Shiner In The Dark’ and ‘Pull Me Through.’
But Royal Blood also wisely dipped into the strong catalogue of hits they have amassed across their first three albums over the last decade or so, including the massive ‘Lights Out‘ from How Did We Get So Dark, ‘Trouble’s Coming’ and ‘Boilermaker’ from Typhoon, before finally closing with their instantly recognisable classics ‘Figure It Out’ and ‘Out Of The Black’ from their self-titled debut. It’s fair to say the boys done good tonight, the atmosphere as well as the temperature was red hot inside the venue, and the punters spilled out into the sunshine seemingly well satisfied. KZ
